About this charge
Distracted driving carries a $390 fine and three demerit points, and it reaches far beyond texting: holding a phone, programming a GPS, eating, grooming, or letting a pet interfere with the controls can all found a charge. Three points and a conviction on your record affect your insurance for three years. These charges frequently turn on what the officer actually observed, and that observation is not always as clear as the ticket suggests.
