About this charge
Speeding is the most common charge on Alberta roads and the most commonly misunderstood. Under the fine schedule in force since 13 March 2026, the penalty rises with the alleged speed, from $88 for one kilometre over to $744 for fifty over, and demerit points climb with it: two points for up to fifteen over, three up to thirty, four up to fifty, and six beyond that. Paying the ticket is a guilty plea. The conviction sits on your abstract for three years, the demerits for two, and your insurer treats it as a rating event long after the fine is forgotten.
